Carpenter Bee Life Cycle & Anatomy
Overview
Carpenter bees get their name because of their tendency to burrow tunnels into wood in order to build their nests. Though carpenter bees are beneficial when it comes to the pollination of plants and flower, they can be a huge nuisance once they've built a nest inside your home.
Carpenter Bee Inspection Guide
With over 500 different species of carpenter bees, they can be difficult to identify, and are often confused with bumble bees.
What Does a Carpenter Bee Look Like?
Carpenter bees are typically .5" to 1" long, with six legs and two sets of wings. Their bodies are divided into three segments, the head, the thorax, and the abdomen. They will have a fuzzy yellow middle with shiny black heads and ends.
How do you know if you have a carpenter bee problem?
Another easy way to identify carpenter bees is to inspect their nests. Check your home for round holes in wood siding, fascia, railings, eaves, or any other wooden feature. These holes are typically about a half inch in diameter, and often will have a pile of sawdust underneath or yellow streaks around the hole. Keep an eye on these holes and you will likely see carpenter bees buzzing in and around the area. Areas around Greenville SC such as Marietta, Glassy Mtn, Keowee Vineyards and may more have major issues in Spring and Fall. We recommend treatment in March and October.
Nests and Damage
While carpenter bee infestations cannot necessarily be prevented, learning to spot them can help prevent extensive damage to your home. Carpenter bee infestations are normally treated in two parts, a topical insecticide spray followed by dusting or dry foaming then plugging each individual hole.
