Common Types of Ants
Life Cycle & Anatomy
Overview
Fire ants are one of the most dangerous ant species found in the United States. Fire ants are usually found in the southeast United States, and are extremely common to South Carolina. They are quick to swarm and will bite, and their venom can cause serious reactions in humans, including swollen, burning, and stinging red bumps and patches on the skin.
What do Fire Ants Look Like?

Fire ants are generally the same size as most other species of ants, and can range in size from 1/16” to ¼” depending on the species and their role in the colony. Like most other ants, fire ants have prominent waists, six legs, and clubbed antennae. Unlike most ants, though, fire ants have stingers, and their main distinguishing feature is their bright red color.
How To Tell If You Have Fire Ants
Fire ant colonies can be easily spotted by the raised mounds of dirt directly above their burrows. These mounds can range from just a few inches to several feet in diameter. The ants normally build their mounds in open, sunny areas in both grass and bare soil.
Prevention
To help prevent fire ants on your property, mow your lawn frequently to keep grass short, and trim trees and shrubs. Make sure to remove grass clippings, tree branches, stacked woods, and leaf piles to eliminate places where fire ants might find shelter. Another way to prevent fire ants from building mounds on your property is to regularly turn mulch or any other bedding material used for gardening or landscaping. Remove ripe fruit from trees and be sure to keep the ground clear of fallen fruit as these are easy food sources for fire ants. Also, store your trash bins far away from your home and make sure that they have tight fitting lids.
